Chinese Giant Salamander

Chinese Giant Salamander (Picture 1)

Chinese Giant Salamander, commonly known as the baby fish, is an amphibian living in fresh water. It is a precious wild animal of Chinese speciality. Because its nighttime cry is like a baby crying, it is commonly known as “baby fish”, but it is not a fish, but the largest amphibious animal, usually 1 meter in length. Left and right, the longest can reach 2 meters, the weight is 20-25 kg, and the maximum is 50 kg. The body color varies with the color of the living environment. The back is brown, reddish brown, dark brown, etc., with irregularly colored spots on the upper surface, and the ventral surface is light brown or grayish white.

Chinese Giant Salamander is in the mud, or in the dark rocky crevices, in clear, low-temperature streams or natural caves. Generally, there are rushing waters, cool water, lush vegetation, mountain streams, rivers and lakes with many cracks and caves, and sometimes also on the branches of trees or fallen trees on the shore, and choose caves at the back of the beach. Inhabited inside, there is usually only one in each cave. The depth of the hole is different. The hole is slightly larger than the body. The hole is spacious and has enough space for the maneuver. The bottom of the hole is flat or fine.

Chinese Giant Salamander is often hidden in caves during the day. It is easy to move at any time, preying on and avoiding enemies. When you are disturbed, you can quickly swim away from the cave to the deep water. Come out and prey in the evening and at night, swim close to the abdomen while swimming, and pat the water by swinging the tail and body. It was very ferocious when it was preying. It was often waiting in the rock between the beaches. When the prey passed, it suddenly opened its mouth and swallowed it, and then sent it to the stomach to digest it slowly.

Chinese Giant Salamander has a large appetite for food, including fish, frogs, crabs, snakes, shrimps, crickets, and aquatic insects, and sometimes eats birds and rodents. Interestingly, it is also good at "using the meter" to capture a kind of stone crab hidden in the stone cracks in the creek, using the characteristics of the stone crab two large scorpions to clamp things, they will not easily loosen, and will have their tail with astringent secretion. The tip extends into the crack of the stone and induces the stone crab to be clamped with a chelate. Once the stone crab is found in the middle, it will be pulled out immediately.

Chinese Giant Salamander is very resistant to hunger when food is lacking, and sometimes it does not starve even if it does not eat for 2-3 years. The activities are gradually reduced from September to October, and in winter, they are hibernating in caves or deep rocks, usually for up to six months, until March of the following year. However, it does not fall asleep, and can still crawl when frightened.

The Chinese Giant Salamander is extremely rare, mainly found in the tributaries of the Yangtze, Yellow and Pearl River basins above 1,500 meters above sea level in China. The distribution of Datun is very extensive. It is found in the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River, the Yangtze River and the Pearl River and its tributaries. It covers Beijing Huairou, Hebei, Henan, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Gansu, Qinghai, Sichuan, Guizhou, Hubei, Hunan, Anhui, and Jiangsu. , Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Fujian, Guangdong and Guangxi provinces and districts. In 1988, the "Law of the People's Republic of China on the Protection of Wild Animals" listed it as China's national second-level protected wild animal and was one of China's national treasures.
