Yangtze white sturgeon

Yangtze white sturgeon (Picture 1)

The Yangtze white sturgeon is huge, with adult fish reaching up to seven or eight meters in speed. It is known as the "water tiger" and "the king of freshwater fish in China". It is also one of the ten largest freshwater fish in the world. One. From January 2, 2020, Yangtze white sturgeon failed to enter 2020 and was declared extinct. Yangtze white sturgeon is an endangered national first-class protected animal in the Yangtze River of China. Because it is very rare and vulnerable to injury and death, the research institution failed to capture mature Yangtze white sturgeon parents for artificial breeding research. People often compare Chinese sturgeon to "living fossil" and "Yangtze River fish king". In fact, Yangtze white sturgeon is older than Chinese sturgeon from fossil records. At present, the flagship species in the Yangtze River ecosystem include Chinese sturgeon, Yangtze River sturgeon, and Yangtze finless porpoise, but their protection situation is also very grim.

The Yangtze white sturgeon was listed as a kind of precious and rare animal under special protection in the "List of Key Protected Wild Animals" released by the Environmental Protection Committee of the State Council of China twice in 1983 and 1987. Class I protected animals, listed as a critically endangered species in the IUCN Red List in 1996 for protection. In fact, as early as 1999, Yangtze white sturgeon resources were less than 400, and since 1985, no supplementary group of Yangtze white sturgeon juveniles has been found in the whole river section. Because of the barriers of water conservancy projects, Yangtze white sturgeon, a migratory species, cannot return to the natural spawning ground of Yangtze white sturgeon. Without reproduction, species will naturally go extinct.

In January 2003, a accidental Yangtze white sturgeon was discovered in Yibin, Sichuan. An article from the Yangtze white sturgeon working group of the Yangtze Fisheries Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences recorded the entire process of release tracking and signal loss: January 27, 2003 at 3 pm, rescue treatment After the successful rescue of the Yangtze white sturgeon, which was accidentally arrested in Yibin, Sichuan on the 24th, the team released the Yangtze white sturgeon by sonar markings and tracked it with the Yangtze Fisheries Research Institute. . The Yangtze white sturgeon was temporarily lost at 5 o'clock on January 29th. It was found again at 14:33 on the Dingdingshijiang section of Nanxi County. At 21:58, the Yangtze white sturgeon continued to move downstream to reach Jiulong Beach. At the river section, due to the swift beaches and complicated waterways, the tracking speedboat hit the reef, and the speedboat propellers and tracking equipment were damaged and could not continue tracking. This may be the last Yangtze white sturgeon seen by humans.
